Welcome to this guide, which has been written to tell children and young people about sexual exploitation online. We hope you will find it interesting and useful. If you want to know more about this issue or get advice or help after reading the guide, you can find the addresses of organisations working to end the sexual exploitation of children online on pages 23-24.

ECPAT has published a new guide for children, Stay safe from online sexual exploitation: a guide for young people. The guide was developed to help young people understand more about the online sexual exploitation of children and ways they can fight to end it and protect themselves from this abuse.

The guide will be announced at the Committee on the Rights of the Child 2014 Day of General Discussion, themed “Digital Media and Children’s Rights” on 12 September 2014. The Day of General Discussion is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the contents and implications of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and to discuss the theme with representatives from governments, other UN treaty bodies and agencies, NGOs and national human rights institutions. ECPAT will be represented at the Day of General Discussion by John Carr, Senior Advisor on Children Online.
ECPAT has welcomed the decision of the Committee to convene its 2014 Day of General Discussion on Digital Media and Children's Rights. Information and communication technologies are now an integral and positive component of modern life, as important to the educational and social development of children and young people as they are to the entire global economy. However, the rapid expansion of the Internet globally, with its increasing and instant reach to individuals, has exposed more children and young people to sexual exploitation and abuse. ECPAT hopes to combat the risk to children online through advocacy and awareness.
